About
Bud Bremner – Veteran Canadian Mastering Engineer
Considered by his peers to be one of Canada’s top mastering engineers, Vancouver’s Bud Bremner has returned to the mastering chair after a six year hiatus. (See personal note from Bud)
Bremner’s Coastal Mastering Studios was Vancouver’s first dedicated CD mastering studio, having developed from the mastering & assembly services of Sonrise Audio Duplication. As the founder of Coastal Mastering, Bud Bremner had prepared over seven thousand titles in his first eighteen years of mastering. This lengthy career and staggering amount of titles had earned Bremner the opportunity to work at Townehouse Mastering in London England, Capitol Mastering in Hollywood and most recently an offer at one of Canada’s leading mastering studios in Toronto.
Ten years before the use of a Digital Audio Workstation in his mastering, he did it the old fashioned way, with a keen ear, good EQ, compressor and limiter, VU meters, ¼” & ½” splicing blocks and good old analog tape. “With the dynamic & bandwidth restrictions of cassette tape, getting the right blend of volume & equalization to sound good on cassette was challenging; far more difficult and time-consuming than current CD mastering. The preparation of thousands of analog Bin-Loop master tapes for audio cassette replication was what I cut my teeth on, and that built the foundation of my mastering skills.”
Many of his past clients have asked for his return to mastering and Bremner has graciously accepted the request. Here are some recent client comments:
• “Bud Bremner and Coastal Mastering take mastering to the next level combining music and science with a little magic to make the music that we create sound great. Bud is a great guy to work with taking a keen interest in making audio sound like you hear it in your head. We’ve worked with a few other mastering engineers and good as they are, Bud Bremner is in a world-class league; good to have you back doing what you’re great at!”

Re: Dwayne Fords’ 1996 release ‘Another Way to Fly’
• “I thought you might be interested to know that one of the songs from [Another Way to Fly], “Follow The Buffalo”, has been included on the 2009 3 CD box set called “This Is My America”. “Follow The Buffalo”, even though it is almost 14 years old, blows away most of the other songs on that album and they were produced in Nashville and mastered, I think in Nashville or New York.”

• “Hi Bud! I’m glad to see that you’re back in the business. (Mastered 60 Miles Down debut release ‘Sink or Swim’) Whenever I need mastering you can count on getting a call from me!”
John Mosco – 60 Miles Down, New Jersey
“‘Sink Or Swim’ has the best vocal harmonies-with a closing guitar groove that is exhilarating. Sixty Miles Down have filled a void in rock music today. There’s a dichotomy at work here, never has music so dark been so damned catchy”.
“This CD is just like a Godsmack CD, yet also like an Alice in Chains CD. The sound of it is amazing. I love every single track!”
